Following last week’s publication of the 2023 winter plan, NHS England issued figures suggesting the NHS had its busiest-ever June and July, with A&E attendances rocketing again. The overall waiting list and delayed discharges were also up. Think-tanks called for an end to the strikes and an emergency injection of funding for people, beds and equipment.

An interesting row broke out between the Royal College of Physicians and NHS England over virtual wards, with the RCP worrying that targets are leading to low-risk patients being admitted, leading to over-medicalisation, unnecessary spending on technology, and further stretched resources. And Babylon Health’s financial woes took a turn for the worse.
